A Tribute to the Hero King of Scotland
Bring a legendary chapter of history into your collection with this authentic 1977 Clydesdale Bank £1 note. This "Famous Scots" series note is widely considered one of the most visually striking designs in modern Scottish numismatics, celebrating the king who secured Scotland's independence.
Obverse (Front): Features a regal portrait of Robert the Bruce (1274–1329) wearing a chainmail coif and crown, flanked by a wild Scottish thistle. The design uses a sophisticated green and pink guilloche pattern.
Reverse (Back): A dynamic, action-packed engraving depicting Robert the Bruce at the Battle of Bannockburn (1314). He is shown on horseback in full battle armor, wielding an axe, leading his soldiers into the fray.
Signatory: A.R. Macmillan, Chief General Manager.
Date of Issue: Glasgow, 1st March 1977.
Issuer: Clydesdale Bank Limited (Scotland).
Denomination: One Pound (£1).
Pick Number: P-211a.
Serial Number: D/AK 854344.
Condition: Choice About Uncirculated (AU) – The note is crisp and bright with sharp corners. It shows a very light, nearly invisible vertical center flick from original bank storage, but retains full original paper body and luster.
Collector's Perspective: This is the "Limited" version of the bank's title, issued before the name change to "Clydesdale Bank PLC." The Bannockburn scene on the reverse is one of the few instances in world currency where a full-scale medieval battle is depicted with such intricate detail. It is a favorite for thematic collectors of royalty, military history, or Scottish culture.
