Silicone Eye Sphere

When the eye is severely damaged due to trauma, infection, or advanced disease, surgical removal may be required to restore comfort and prevent further complications. The two most common procedures are:

• Evisceration – removal of the internal contents of the eye while preserving the scleral shell
• Enucleation – complete removal of the eye globe

Following either procedure, a Silicone Eye Sphere is implanted to restore natural orbital volume and maintain proper anatomical contour. These permanent implants help preserve eyelid function, support facial symmetry, and provide a stable foundation for future prosthetic fitting.

Role of Eye Spheres and Conformers

Silicone Eye Sphere (Permanent Implant)

• Occupies the orbital cavity after evisceration or enucleation
• Helps maintain natural orbital volume and eyelid position
• Provides support for extraocular muscles when attached
• Enhances motility of the future ocular prosthesis
• Made from biocompatible, medical‑grade silicone

Conformers (Temporary Devices)

• Inserted immediately after surgery
• Maintain the shape of the conjunctival sac
• Prevent tissue contraction, closure, or adhesion
• Protect the surgical site during healing

Once healing is complete, the conformer is removed and replaced with a custom ocular prosthesis, restoring natural appearance and movement.
