HISTORY
The 59th Infantry Scout Dog Platoon was a support unit for the U.S. Army's 11th Infantry Brigade, part of the 23rd Infantry Division (Americal) during the Vietnam War. The platoon was known for its scout dogs, which were highly effective but also faced danger; a memorable incident involved a booby trap that killed seven men and a scout dog. The unit was originally the 59th Infantry Counterfire Platoon but was re-designated to its scout dog role after being inactivated in Korea and later reactivated for Vietnam.
