Introducing: The Persephone Bracelet. This gorgeous bracelet is the first in our series of jewellery inspired by famous mythological women. The Persephone bracelet has been carefully crafted with the goddess Persephone and her story in mind.

Persephone is the Goddess of Spring (and vegetation) in Greek mythology. As the story goes, the beautiful Persephone was abducted by Hades (the God of the Underworld), who instantly fell in love with her after seeing her picking flowers in a field. Persephone's mother, Demeter (The Goddess of Harvest) was distraught and it caused a great drought and famine in the world, which led to the other Gods confronting Hades about releasing Persephone. Hades, unwilling to part with his new bride, convinced Persephone to eat six pomegranate seeds from the underworld. Persephone, not realizing that once a being consumes food of the underworld, they can no longer leave the underworld, ate the seeds. With leverage in hand, Hades came to a compromise with the other Gods: Persephone would stay half of the year in the underworld (this led to the seasons where flowers and vegetation withered and died in fall and winter), and could return above to her mother's side for the other half of the year (thus returning the season where flowers and vegetation bloom and flourish in spring and summer).

This bracelet features two silver-plated pomegranate beads, each facing in opposite directions. This symbolizes Persephone's time split between the underworld and on earth. Each side features two hand-carved garnet beads in the shape of pomegranate (to symbolize the four seasons). In between each pomegranate-shaped bead are six round garnet beads to represent the six pomegranate seeds that Persephone ate in the underworld. The four larger round garnet beads on each side represent Persephone's relationships during the year: half of the time, she is the wife of Hades and Queen of the Underworld. Thus, two of the beads represent their relationship. The other two beads represent Persephone and her mother Demeter, who share a very close relationship. Thus, the other two beads represent them and their reunion in the springtime.

Each bracelet has been hand-strung on a stretchy cotton cord and measures approximately 3.25 in/8.25 cm on the inside. It can be stretched to fit over your hand. Please avoid over-stretching (as you would any other stretchy bracelet) to avoid breaking the string.

All of the garnet beads on this bracelet come directly from India (and the pomegranate shaped beads were hand-carved in India as well). The sterling-silver plated pomegranate beads (unstamped) were sourced in Turkey.

This bracelet has been carefully designed and crafted by hand by a Canadian artisan. It is not mass-produced, nor was it purchased from overseas companies using cheap labour. Crisis is turned into challenge under Garnet’s influence and promotes mutual assistance in times of trouble.
