What we’ll be making: Pixel-style printmaking plates and original art prints using LEGO tiles and block printing ink

Dive into the colourful world of printmaking in this playful and creative workshop, where children will use LEGO baseboards and tiles to design their own pixel-style printing plates before transforming them into bold original artworks using real printmaking techniques.

Children will explore how simple LEGO pieces can become powerful creative tools as they build raised designs onto LEGO baseboards using tiles and bricks of different shapes and sizes. Once their designs are complete, children will roll block printing ink across the surface and press their creations onto paper to reveal exciting printed images full of texture, pattern, and surprising detail.

Design possibilities are endless — children might choose to create flowers, animals, buildings, words, abstract patterns, characters, or completely imaginative scenes. Young artists are welcome to freely experiment with their own ideas or follow guided inspiration and step-by-step support from the teacher throughout the workshop.

As children build and print their designs, they’ll be introduced to the fundamentals of relief printmaking while also developing creative confidence, problem-solving skills, spatial reasoning, planning abilities, and fine motor coordination. The grid-based nature of LEGO design also encourages children to think about composition, symmetry, repetition, and pixel-style image building in a fun and accessible way.

Printmaking is a wonderfully engaging process for children because it combines experimentation, surprise, and hands-on creativity. Children often feel a huge sense of excitement lifting the paper to reveal their printed artwork for the very first time.
