This striking stamp from São Tomé and Príncipe honors Pero Escobar, a 15th-century Portuguese navigator who took part in several landmark voyages during the Age of Discovery. Escobar sailed with Diogo Cão along the African coast and helped explore the Gulf of Guinea, where São Tomé and Príncipe themselves were discovered and settled. The design by Alberto Souza depicts Escobar in period attire, holding navigational instruments that symbolize his maritime achievements. Printed by Lito Maia, Porto, this issue celebrates Portugal’s pioneering explorers and their link to the islands’ colonial history.
