This small yet historically significant bronze coin was minted under Theodosius II, Eastern Roman Emperor from AD 408 to 450. Issued at Cyzicus between AD 425–435, the coin reflects the growing prominence of Christian symbolism in late Roman coinage.
Obverse: Draped and cuirassed bust of Theodosius II facing right, wearing a pearl diadem.
Legend: D N THEODO-SIVS P F AVG – “Our Lord Theodosius, Dutiful and Fortunate Augustus.”
Reverse: A cross within a laurel wreath, symbolizing divine victory and unity of church and empire.
Exergue: SMKA – Signifying the Cyzicus mint, 1st officina.
With a well-centered strike and a deep black patina, this piece is a fine representative of the transitional period between classical Roman and Byzantine coinage.
