Zanthoxylum simulans, the Sichuan pepper hails from the regions of China and Taiwan. It is a medium to large deciduous shrub which is quite bushy in nature. The attractive foliage is made up of vibrant green compound leaves made up of broad leaflets, sprays of fragrant, yellow-green flowers form in the summer which give way to clusters of small red berries in the autumn that split open to reveal black seeds. The branches have very large sharp thorns with bark that is very pleasantly fragrant.
