This is a Great Britain Penny Red (issued 1841–1857), featuring the profile of Queen Victoria in line-engraved design. The stamp shows the denomination "ONE PENNY" at the base and has alphabetic check letters in the lower corners (here: “E–D”). It was printed in red-brown and is perforated. The cancellation is a bold black Maltese Cross, commonly used in this period. This issue succeeded the famous 1840 Penny Black, with the color changed to red to help postal clerks detect reused stamps after cancellation. A classic Victorian line-engraved issue, highly prized by collectors of early British philately.
