About the artist:

William ‘Bill’ Yaxley, b. 1943, has spent much of his life in rural Australia working the land as a mining field assistant, farmer, and viticulturalist – all of which has informed his completely self-taught art practice. His paintings depict idyllic scenes of farming life around Australia in a narrative style, and concentrates on the elements of texture, shape, colour, and movement, which he combines with an aerial perspective to depict regional locations and subject matter with an irreverent sense of humour.

About the artwork:

On first glance, the Claudie River is an idyllic paradise, but, as always with Yaxley, not all is as it seems. On closer inspection, the two men in the boat are holding rifles, and meandering up behind them are two enormous crocodiles. Dotted among the vegetation is a cassowary; a snake is wrapped around a tree; and wild pigs fossick in the dirt. Danger lurks for the intrepid-or perhaps foolish-adventurers.
