This is a classic Great Britain Penny Red, issued in 1841 as the successor to the famous Penny Black. Printed in a rich red-brown shade, it features the profile of Queen Victoria engraved by Charles Heath and based on William Wyon’s portrait. The corner letters “L–G” identify its unique plate position. The stamp carries a black barred numeral cancellation, typical of the period. Issued imperforate on unwatermarked paper, the Penny Red remained in circulation for decades, making it a cornerstone of Victorian philately. Collectors value it for its historical significance as part of the world’s first line-engraved issues.
