Barbatus Corydoras

Barbatus Corydoras (Scleromystax barbatus) is one of the most unusual and impressive members of the corydoras family. This robust, large-bodied fish is native to coastal Atlantic drainages of southeastern Brazil. Males are extraordinary — they develop vivid golden-yellow to orange facial bristles and cheek plates as they mature, giving them a bearded, lion-like appearance that is unlike any other small catfish in the hobby.

Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms. This species benefits from higher-protein feeding, especially for developing the vivid male facial coloration.

Native to coastal Atlantic drainages in southeastern Brazil — Rio de Janeiro state and surrounding areas. This species prefers cooler water than most tropical corydoras, reflecting its subtropical origin. It is one of the few corydoras relatives that prefers significantly cooler conditions.

Keep in groups of at least six. Males can be mildly territorial with one another but are not aggressive toward other species. A ratio of more females than males reduces male-male competition. Completely peaceful with all non-predatory tankmates.

Corydoras are highly sensitive to substrate quality — fine sand is strongly preferred over gravel, as rough substrates damage the delicate barbels they use to forage. Regular partial water changes and pristine water quality are essential, as all Corydoras are sensitive to nitrites and dissolved waste. Sand substrate, gentle flow, and shaded areas with driftwood or plants will keep this species at its happiest and most active.
