Agar used for microbiology is derived from algae and is valued for its inert nature. It forms solid and semisolid media essential for isolating microorganisms and is commonly employed as a growth medium for bacteria, fungi and yeast. Agar remains solid at elevated temperatures (up to 85 °C), permitting incubation without melting while its transparency allows easy observation of colonies.
Being non‑toxic and biocompatible, it does not inhibit microbial growth. Agar can be combined with nutrients, antibiotics or indicators to tailor growth conditions and is widely used in research across pharmaceutical, environmental, cosmetic and food and drink industries.
