This is a classic Great Britain 1d (One Penny) Red, issued between 1858 and 1879 during the reign of Queen Victoria. Printed in a rich red shade, the design features the left-facing profile of Queen Victoria, based on the original engraving by William Wyon. The stamp includes corner letters “J–G” which identify its position on the printed sheet. Unlike the imperforate Penny Reds of earlier issues, this stamp is perforated, making it part of the later line-engraved issues. The bold cancellation mark “97” indicates postal usage, adding historical postal character. Highly collectible, Penny Reds are valued for their plate varieties and postmark interest, with this example being a fine representation of Victorian postal history.
