I must admit that I am a bit less easily excited by tramp art pieces than I once was; it takes a pretty special frame, or box, etc. to sell me these days. This, to my eye, is exactly that--teeming with character, and aura. I am pretty certain the mirror is original to the frame--very late 19th/very early 20th c I believe--and over time has tarnished/de-silvered to perfection. The stacked, chip-carved frame shows its original black paint, which has softened/mellowed to perfection as well. And the whole thing is just the right amount of irregular/imperfect for one to really feel the hand of its maker at work. Pretty rare to find an old tramp frame with original mirror like this in my experience, and while not especially fancy, I think this one is really a beauty.
