This two-stamp airmail issue from Mexico commemorates the 1979 Summer Universiade, hosted in Mexico City under the auspices of FISU (International University Sports Federation).
The 1.60 MXN stamp by F. Espinosa depicts a symbolic plant sprouting from a pot inscribed “FISU,” with branches bearing sports symbols like a football and volleyball—representing the nurturing of youth through sport.
The 4.30 MXN design by I. Alcántara shows doves emerging from a flaming cauldron, captioned “deporte... fuego de paz” (“sport… flame of peace”), expressing the spirit of international friendship and harmony fostered by the Universiade.
Both stamps highlight Mexico’s pride in hosting this major student sporting event and its commitment to peace through athletic competition.
