Jatamansi is an erect perennial herb found in the alpine regions of the Himalayas.

  • Rootstock: Woody, thick rhizomes with reddish-brown fibrous tufts
  • Leaves: Radical leaves elongated; cauline leaves sessile, oblong or sub-ovate
  • Flowers: Rosy, pale pink or bluish, arranged in dense, round cymes
  • Fruits: Small
  • Habitat: Alpine Himalayas

The drug consists of short, thick, dark grey rhizomes crowned with reddish-brown fibrous remains of leaf petioles. Jatamansi has a pleasant aromatic odour and bitter aromatic taste. It yields up to 1.9% pale yellow essential oil (spikenard oil) with a fragrance similar to patchouli and valerian.

Jatamansi is a powerful Medhyā Rasāyana. It calms the mind, reduces restlessness, anxiety, irritability and hyperactivity. It is beneficial in epilepsy, hysteria, convulsions, nervous disorders and mental exhaustion.

Cardiac Disorders:
Used in palpitation of the heart and arrhythmias. Spikenard oil and jatamansone have shown anti-arrhythmic activity.

Sleep Disorders & Stress:
Acts as a natural tranquilizer and sedative. Useful in insomnia, mental stress, depression and emotional instability.

Epilepsy & Convulsive Disorders:
Effective in convulsions, febrile seizures and delirium associated with fever.

Digestive Disorders:
Carminative and stomachic. Useful in flatulence, epigastric pain and digestive disturbances.

Menstrual & Women’s Health:
Acts as emmenagogue. Helpful in dysmenorrhoea, menopausal symptoms like depression, mood swings and irritability.

Skin & External Use:
Applied externally in wounds, eruptions, burning sensation and to improve complexion. Powder is also used to control excessive sweating.

Fever:

6. Doses (मात्रा)

The usual dose of Jatamansi powder is 500 mg to 1 gram, once or twice daily with honey, milk or warm water.
In compound formulations, 3 to 9 grams may be given depending on the combination and condition.
Decoction may be used as prescribed by an Ayurvedic physician.
For external use, the powder or paste is applied locally on affected areas.
