USS Davis (DD-937), a Forrest Sherman-class destroyer, was commissioned in February 1957 . She served across the Atlantic, Caribbean, Mediterranean, and Vietnam, taking part in the Cuban Missile Crisis, astronaut recovery, and firefights off Vietnam—earning multiple efficiency awards and a Meritorious Unit Commendation . Upgraded for advanced ASW/NGFS, she later cruised South America, participated in UNITAS XVII, and steamed through the Indian Ocean and Mediterranean in the 1970s . In the early 1980s she conducted major deployments including the Persian Gulf, NATO exercises, and NATO contingencies in Lebanon, before beginning decommissioning in late 1982 .
