A very elegant late 18th century Adam period armchair or desk chair of very generous proportions, newly recovered in splendid Italian archival silk and linen damask, exquisitely finished to perfection with patinated bronze studs over matching trim. England, circa 1790's.

Why we like it

We love the grand scale of this armchair, with its confidently drawn, elegant back; the sculptural, superbly carved armrests and the gloriously golden colour of the mahogany. The fine carved ornaments on the crest rail are very rare and unusual. Perfect as occasional seating in a living room as well as a generous desk chair, this beautifully reupholstered armchair is bound to be a statement piece in your home.

Design

A virtually identical design appears in George Hepplewhite's 1788 book of designs for furniture 'The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide' (pl. 4, dated 1787). Evidently, such a sophisticated example is a work of an accomplished craftsman, who followed the latest design trends and catered for a style-conscious audience.
