Caribena versicolor, commonly known as the Antilles pinktoe tarantula, is an arboreal tarantula native to the Caribbean island of Martinique. Spiderlings display metallic blue coloration and a patterned abdomen that gradually changes as they grow, developing green carapaces, reddish abdomens, and purple-red legs. They are among the most popular and widely kept tarantulas in captivity due to their dramatic color changes throughout development and distinctive adult coloration.

Caribena versicolor Care

Caribena versicolor adapts well to captive conditions when provided with adequate ventilation, hydration, and vertical climbing space. This species constructs extensive silken retreats among branches, cork bark, and enclosure décor, spending much of its time within these webbed structures.

• Enclosure: 25-dram vial or equivalent for spiderlings, upgraded as needed with growth; 8” x 8” x 12” or larger for adults
• Substrate: Coconut fiber, peat moss, or other moisture-retentive substrate
• Temperature: 75–85°F
• Humidity: Moderate humidity with good airflow
• Diet: Fruit flies, crickets, cockroaches, and other appropriately sized feeder insects
• Water: Lightly moisten the substrate as needed and provide water droplets on the walls for spiderlings; larger specimens should be provided with a water dish.

Routine maintenance consists of removing uneaten prey, maintaining appropriate moisture levels, and spot cleaning when necessary.

Natural History

Caribena versicolor is endemic to Martinique, where it inhabits trees, shrubs, and other elevated vegetation. Juveniles and adults construct silken retreats among leaves and branches, using them for shelter and to ambush prey. This species is adapted to warm tropical conditions and spends the majority of its life above ground.
