This is the second of two drawings I purchased from the great Chuck Auerbach at the recent Nashville show, part of a larger series of graphite drawings, c. late 19th century, I presume more or less autobiographical to the young woman here arriving "home again from college." What I love about this one is how much our young woman looks as if greeting her own shadow; as if she's gone away and come back to meet her former self and shake her hand. Most likely the figure at left is in fact her mother, looking a bit older than our protagonist at close glance; interestingly then that the mother was only halfway drawn on the page, as if to suggest a diminishing presence, receding from view, with a suitcase sandwiched between the two of them.
4 3/8" x 4 5/8", graphite on natural-brown paper. One loss along bottom edge as evident and tiny torn bit along to left edge.
