In 2016, a joint report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) showed that occupational risk factors were responsible for 1.9 million deaths and 90 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) globally. The ILO further estimates that the sectors with the highest occupational deaths are agriculture, forestry, mining, and construction, where employment is largely informal. Additionally, smaller workplaces have worse occupational safety and health (OSH) records compared to larger ones..
Studies have also shown that workers in low-paying jobs are those in poorer countries face higher risks compared to their counterparts in wealthier, more developed nations. Estimates suggest that workers in developing countries are 10 to 20 times more likely to face occupational hazards than those in developed coountries.
