Ice Hockey in a Nutshell

The modern sport of Ice hockey, originated in Canada during the late 1800's, drawing inspiration from various stick and ball games like bandy, hurling, shinty, and lacrosse. The first known organized indoor game under rules was played in Montreal, Canada in 1875, and the sport quickly gained popularity, becoming Canada's national sport. 

The sport's early influences include games like bandy (a precursor to ice hockey), hurling, shinty, and lacrosse, that were all played in Great Britain, Ireland, and North America etc. It is also believed that British soldiers stationed in Canada played a form of ice hockey, and the first use of a puck instead of a ball was recorded in Kingston, Ontario, in 1860. 

A Nova Scotian named James Creighton, is credited with organizing the first recorded public indoor game in 1875 at the Victoria Skating Rink in Montreal. 

Some important moments in the sport of Ice Hockey - 
The McGill University Hockey Club was formed in 1880, and the first set of rules were developed by McGill students in 1879. 

- The Stanley Cup: Initially called the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, was commissioned in 1892 and first awarded in 1893. 

The premier Ice hockey league in North America was initially known as The National Hockey Association (NHA) (but later changed to the National Hockey League NHL) which was formed in 1910, marking the beginning of ice hockey as a professional sport. Ice hockey also spread to the United States during the 1890s and to Europe around the turn of the 20th century.

Ice hockey was included in the 1920 Summer Olympics and became a regular sport at the Winter Olympics. 

The official International body for the sport is called the Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) which was founded in 1908 as the Ligue Internationale de Hockey sur Glace (LIHG).
