Ernie Davis was the running back for Syracuse University from 1959 to 1961. As a sophomore in 1959 Davis led them to the national championship capping an undefeated season. After his senior year in 1961 Ernie Davis was awarded the Heisman Trophy for the most outstanding collegiate football player. Ernie Davis also wore the same number 44 as Syracuse University alumnus Jim Brown helping establish the tradition at the school that acknowledged in 2005 when the school retired the number.
