A Tropical Treasure: The 1939 Government of Barbados $1
Capture the historic charm of the Caribbean with this authentic One Dollar note. Issued on 1st December 1939, this note is a classic example of Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co.’s masterful colonial engraving. It features the vibrant multi-colored underprints that make early Caribbean currency among the most visually striking in the world.
Obverse (Front): Features a youthful portrait of King George VI in his military uniform on the right. On the left is the Barbados Seal, which depicts Neptune (or Britannia) being drawn across the ocean by sea-horses, a powerful symbol of British maritime supremacy.
Reverse (Back): A formal and elegant layout centered around the "GOVERNMENT OF BARBADOS" title. The intricate geometric lathe work in orange and blue was designed specifically to thwart the counterfeiters of the era.
The "Wartime" Issue: Issued just months after the outbreak of WWII, these notes were vital for the local Barbadian economy during a period of restricted global trade.
Printer: Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. Ltd., New Malden, Surrey, England.
Watermark: Features the "Horses" motif, mirroring the island seal.
Issuer: Government of Barbados.
Denomination: One Dollar ($1).
Date: 1st December 1939.
Pick Number: P-2b.
Serial Number: B/H 729109.
Grading: PMG 25 Very Fine.
Collector's Perspective: Barbados currency from this era is notoriously difficult to find in grades above "Fine." The humid, salty air of the Caribbean was brutal on paper currency, leading to most notes becoming soft, stained, or torn. Finding a Very Fine 25 specimen with solid paper body and clear, vibrant colors is a major win for any British Commonwealth collector.
