It doesn't take a whole lot to sell me on a naive 19th century painting with sheep and a sheepherder in it, but with this one it it's the ultra lush landscape that really does it for me. And the stylized treatment and super rich color of those trees and hills, river and sky actually made me think immediately of the paintings of Thomas Hart Benton and John Steuart Curry (apt as I found this en route to Kansas City) to come many years later. To my eye, not your average bucolic folk art painting, but really rather muscular and electric.
12 1/4” x 9 1/4”, oil on board, and in very good condition, with a little paint loss along the edges, likely from where it previously framed.
