Khorasan — the historical province spanning northeastern Iran into modern Turkmenistan and Afghanistan — sustained a continuous weaving tradition from roughly the 16th century onward, distinct from the Tabriz-Kashan-Isfahan court axis to the west. Khorasan weavers became known for two things specifically: their use of mahi (Persian: ماهی, fish) medallion architecture — stylized fish swimming around a central rosette — and their preference for densely-filled fields where almost no ground shows between motifs. Mineral-dye indigo on Khorasan grounds reads deeper than indigo from western Persian centers because the field density doesn't let the eye rest on plain ground.

That field density is the signature. Where the cohort's Ardabil anchor uses the canonical medallion-suspended-in-open-field convention (the medallion floats), Khorasan compresses everything: medallion fights for visual space against the surrounding pattern. It's a fundamentally different reading experience.

Care

Spot-clean with mild detergent; low-suction vacuum; professional clean every 18–24 months. Synthetic-fiber 1200 Reeds is not the throw-in-the-machine category.

Sizes & scale behavior

Sizes available: 3×6, 3×10, 5×7.5, 6.5×10, 8.2×11.5, 10×13 ft. Khorasan reads correctly only at 5×7.5 and 6.5×10. The high-density field crushes in below 5×7.5 (no rest space between motifs) and reads oppressive above 8.2×11.5 (too much density for a room to absorb visually). This is the cohort's most size-sensitive Navy register — the wrong scale and the rug behaves badly.

Where it belongs

Khorasan flatters intimacy:

• Low-ceiling living rooms (8–9 ft) where a denser rug actually fixes a top-heavy room rather than making it worse
• Libraries with floor-to-ceiling shelving — the rug's field density matches the wall density
• Candlelit dining — the mineral indigo reveals depth under flame that flat LED kills
• Reading alcoves where you want the floor to absorb the eye instead of bouncing it back up

Pair with deep walnut, oxblood leather, antique brass, ivory linen, brown-toned mohair. Avoid polished metals and cool grays — the Khorasan ground pulls everything cool toward muddy.

When not to choose this

If the room is open-plan, high-ceiling, sunlit, or contemporary-minimalist, Khorasan will fight the architecture. Go to the Ardabil anchor (open field, ceremonial scale) or the Mashhad sibling (refined-restrained, more daylight-tolerant) instead. Also skip if you want the room to feel brighter — Khorasan absorbs light.
