The biannual for cinephiles, launched by the eponymous New York arthouse cinema The Metrograph, celebrates the ‘different personalities and artistic sensibilities drawn together under the big tent that is cinema.’ We loved the launch issue and are excited by this follow-up, again led by Annabel Brady Brown (late of Fireflies magazine) and editorial design hero Matt Willey (Port, Inque et al).

The positioning of the magazine is neatly summed up by an anecdote opening Brady Brown’s editorial letter; ‘David Lynch, flush from the success of ‘The Elephent Man’ (1980), was invited to visit Skywalker Ranch by George Lucas, who was considering Lynch as a potential director for the planned final entry in his ‘Star Wars’ trilogy…’ 

The breadth of the magazine is thrilling: as well as a David Lynch tribute, take a trawl through the unmade projects in Paul Morrissey’s archive, read an interview with Christian Petzold (‘Transit,’ ‘Undine,’ ‘Afire’), and enjoy a look back at the role of the Booth Girl in cinema. There’s also a fascinating tutorial on creating latex monster masks, and this issue’s map of filming locations covers Serbia.

What’s brilliant about The Metrograph is the way it leavens the longform journalism with clever takes on the visual aspects of cinema. Highly recommended for cinephiles and magazine nerds alike, it makes us want to visit the movie house its named for.
