This is a small, attractive species native to Minas Gerais, Brazil. They inhabit campo rupestre, an ecoregion characterized by high-alt grasslands, rocky outcrops, and shallow, nutrient-poor soil. The species was named after the type locality, the city of Diamantina, and is only known from that area.
Due to their bright coloration and small size, they have exploded in popularity within the hobby and are a must-have species for many collectors.
