I didn’t know anything about the Knights of Pythias but after a little historical online research I was able to find their 1902 Declaration of Principles and I've included a screenshot here. It’s actually from the Royal Lodge No. 6, New Westminster, which I believe is the same lodge location as the building in the postcard.
The declaration captures the spirit of the era – friendship, charity, service, mutual support, and a strong emphasis on religious tolerance. The group appears to be still around today, quietly continuing its community‑service work in small lodges across North America.
Early Pythian halls weren’t just meeting places – they doubled as social hubs, hosting everything from roller‑skating rinks to community dances. It’s a little window into how people built community long before the internet, malls or even paved streets.
