The first kit in Bandai's Perfect Grade Unleashed line, a complete reengineering of the RX-78-2 Gundam at 1/60 scale. The flagship Earth Federation mobile suit of the One Year War, piloted by Amuro Ray in Mobile Suit Gundam (1979), rebuilt with the most ambitious internal frame in Gunpla history.

The PG Unleashed RX-78-2 Gundam is history-making in its number of gimmicks and new technologies, with a build experience unlike anything in the Perfect Grade lineup before it. It features the Gunpla Evolution Link System, a step-by-step assembly process that simulates the experience of building a real mobile suit. The internal frame, which serves as the skeleton, is assembled in the earliest stage of any Perfect Grade kit. It is also the largest frame in Gunpla history, with a total height of about 18cm. The kit reaches over 90 points of articulation after assembly, the largest number of joints in Gunpla history. The fuselage uses a core block mechanism and a new structure that combines 40 joints. Metallic moulding colour and plated parts are used for the multi-layer truss frame to create four distinct metallic expressions, combining three kinds of secondary processing (silver plating, matte plating, and chrome plating) with metal parts and newly developed etched seals. The kit includes the most full-body open-hatch gimmicks ever seen in a Gundam kit and ships with a new RGB two-lamp LED unit that enables colour change. A very small lighting unit is also installed in the beam sabre, so the beam blade lights from the base in a gradation for realism. A pin-type BR435 lithium battery (one test battery included) and two LR41 button-cell batteries (not included, sold separately) are required for the light effects.
