Designed by Hungarian-born sculptor Andor Mészáros (1900–1973), who settled in Australia in 1939, this 63mm bronze medal was created for the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. Mészáros, known for his large religious and commemorative works, captured both classical strength and modern spirit in this design. The obverse features Melbourne’s coat of arms, Olympic rings, and a kangaroo framed by floral motifs. On the reverse, an athlete raises the Olympic flag surrounded by marching figures and the motto Citius Altius Fortius. Struck by Pinches in London and minted locally by KG Luke, the medal symbolised Australia’s arrival on the world stage.
