This sapphire has the most beautiful colour - typically described as 'cornflower' blue, this stone instantly reminded me of wisteria blossom. A delicate mix of pale violet and blue, the deep proportions of this old-cut sapphire allow every subtle shade and tone in between to be shown as the ring is turned.
Initially, this sapphire was mounted in an antique French ring dating to c.1880 that was too damaged to be restored. The sapphire is from the old mines of Ceylon (modern day Sri Lanka) and is unheated - a truly rare and special gemstone. Given the charmingly misshapen cushion-like oval outline of the sapphire, it is more than likely it was hand-cut at an even earlier date, probably c.1850-1860.
In a rub-over setting with fine millegrain detail, re-mounted in an antique-style solitaire ring in 18ct yellow gold. The gallery is tiered with an open arcade featuring intricate chenier details, to a collet bellow engraved with an Art-Deco inspired pattern, raised and bordered by fine millegrain edging. Slightly raised shoulders with an engraved linear pattern and millegrain borders that terminate at a solid 18ct yellow gold shank.
Faithful to the antique style, the ring sits low in profile and conforms well to the finger - perfect to be worn and admired everyday!
