About The Painting
Based on memory, the scene is a reflection on two types of space; personal and intimate on the one hand; public and boundless on the other. It is a reflection that we may all have had, from the privileged vantage point of a balcony.
About The Artist
Chris Bruce lives and works in Cornwall. He has a BA in Fine Art from Cheltenham Art College (2002), and an MA in Contemporary Visual Art from Falmouth University (2008). He would classify himself as a narrative artist, concerned with various forms of story-telling and the populist tropes of the contemporary political conversation. His work has appeared in the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Exhibition (20 & 21), the Wells Art Contemporary (22 & 25), the Jackson’s Art Prize (Acrylic Prize 24) and the John Ruskin Prize (25). In addition to his painting & drawing practice, he posts political cartoons on Instagram and in online news publications (@bruce_works15).
With his practice spanning painting, drawing, and political cartooning, his work is rooted in an exploration of pareidolia - the human tendency to find patterns and stories within chaos. In his paintings, figures and subjects emerge gradually through layers of mark-making, the composition evolving iteratively until a story reveals itself.
