Cotton Seed Oil: Overview
Cottonseed oil is a vegetable oil extracted from the seeds of cotton plants (Gossypium species). It belongs to the Malvaceae family and has a light golden-yellow color. This oil is widely used in cooking due to its mild flavor and high smoke point (about 232°C or 450°F), making it suitable for frying, baking, and salad dressings. It contains a balanced mix of saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fats, with linoleic acid as the primary fatty acid. Cottonseed oil is also used in processed foods, cosmetics, and industrial applications. However, it must be refined to remove gossypol, a natural toxin.
