“Traditional Female Dress”

Women’s wear introduced during Guam’s Spanish Colonial Period 1565-1898; influenced by missionaries to “cover up”.

Chamorros women adapted this look (moda); comprised of

1. Chita – top - lightweight material, traditionally white color only.

2. Lupes – bottom piece/skirt piece usually A-shaped or circular with a “tail” with adjustable drawstring waist.

3. Kamisola -Undergarment/Camisole: embroidered or lace at the neckline and bottom edges.

This female style of clothing was common until American colonizers discouraged the use, due to health reasons – it brought up dust & germs.
