This book, The New AR-15 Complete Owner's Guide, is a completely new volume that complements Walt's The AR-15 Complete Assembly Guide, also from Scott Duff Publications. The New AR-15 Complete Owner's Guide benefits from Walt's ongoing research into the design and history of the AR series, and brings to light both new information and new questions. Even the most experienced and knowledgeable AR aficionado is likely to find something that only now is coming to light.

PURPOSE (from the book)

While we've brought the content of The New AR-15 Complete Owner's Guide into the 21st century, the purpose we set out for the original Guide is largely unchanged: to build a foundation for understanding, evaluating and selecting AR-15 rifles, components and accessories. We'll cover the AR-15 .223/5.56-MM rifle and carbine. It's for everyone interested in this, the most versatile rifle system ever developed, whether contemplating one's first AR-15 or one's tenth.

We'll be using certain conventions and following a regular structure throughout this book. "AR-15" should be taken to mean "AR-15-type rifle," whether by Colt ("AR-15" is a Colt registered trademark), Armalite, Bushmaster, DMPS, Ruger or others. "Rifle" should generally be taken to mean both rifle and carbine versions, though specific carbine issues will be addressed. " .223/5.56-MM" encompasses both the military 5.56-MM and commercial .223 Remington cartridges.

Because of the AR-15 rifle system's versatility, we'll be defining four general areas of AR-15 applications: Defensive Rifle, Hunting Rifle, Competition Rifle, and "Just Plain Fun!" Inevitably, within the Defensive and Hunting categories there will be an extensive range of configurations. We'll do our best to address the specific needs of the broadest range of users we can.

Within these pages you will find a straightforward, uncomplicated approach to AR-15 ownership and use. Based on your needs and desires, we'll help you think through your configuration and choice of AR-15s. Once you have your rifle, you'll find useful information to help you operate, maintain and troubleshoot it. So, let's begin our journey of discovery into the magnificent world of the AR-15!

Since the publication of the author's The AR-15 Complete Owner's Guide, readers have asked for a book that would help guide them through the assembly of their AR-15-type rifle. Ideally, such a book would impart the tips, tricks, pitfalls and "gotchas!" that experienced AR-15 enthusiasts and armorers have discovered and developed over the years.

This is that book. It goes beyond the military manuals in depth and scope, using words and pictures to clearly guide the reader through every operation required to assemble their AR-15-type rifle. You'll learn the best and easiest ways to build your rifle. It won't make you an AR-15 armorer, but it will make you a more knowledgeable owner. You'll be able to do more with (and to) your rifle. You'll also be able to better judge the competence of those whom you choose to work on your rifle, and to discuss your needs more intelligently with them.
