About Craft

Himalayan weaves art is untouched by modern machines. Himachalis have practised weaving for over 5,000 years.

This collection brings to you the craft of Kullu weaving that was influenced by the many travellers from across the Himalayas. To this day, the intertwined weaving traditions gathered can be seen in the workmanship. Kullu shawls are famous for its intricate multi-colour, strong geometrical pattern woven with woollen yarns.  Nestled in the lap of Himalayas, Kullu’s climatic conditions necessitated the birth of handloom weaving in the valley.

The weaving activity was originally practised in the Kinnaur valley but eventually passed down to Kullu as the people migrated from former to latter. Nearly every dweller in the valley is involved in this craft and has honed the skill of hand-loom weaving to preserve the ancestral custom and tradition.

At Indian Tijori, we are reminded of the white winters of Himachal Pradesh. The celebrations, however, have always been colourful – as is our latest collection “Weaves of Himachal”. We are excited to bring it hot from the looms of some of our National award-winning artisan weavers.
