Auction catalog from an auction of rare antique dolls. The auction was held in October 2008. Prices realized are included.
She is Madalaine Selfridge and Wendy was her doll. In fact, it was probably the favorite doll of the legendary California collector because Wendy appeared on the cover of all three of the doll books authored by Selfridge during the 1960's. There was Dimples and Sawdust (co-authored with Marlowe Cooper), Wendy and Friends, and Dolls, Images of Love. If you collected dolls during that time you owned the Selfridge books, and you wore them out with wishing.
Wendy, only one of hundreds of rare dolls appearing in that trilogy of books, was a bisque character doll, model 2033, made by Bruno Schmidt about 1912. Actually, Wendy was a name bestowed on the doll by Selfridge herself, and it is testimony to the historical weight of the Selfridge trilogy books, that collectors still refer to every doll model 2033 by Bruno Schmidt as "Wendy".
Now the legendary doll collection of Madalaine Selfridge is ending, and it will be sold at a landmark auction on October 11-12 at the Ritz-Carlton in Half Moon Bay, California, along with the original famous "Wendy" doll. 2008
