Mary Poppins first visits Number Seventeen, Cherry Tree Lane, blowing in on an east wind to be nanny to Jane, Michael, Barbara and John Banks. The young children immediately know their new nanny is special and embark on lots of wonderful adventures in her company. The first in an eight-book series by Australian-born author P. L. Travers, Mary Poppins (1934) captured the imaginations of children worldwide and the publication featured illustrations by Mary Shepard.

Ninety years later, The Royal Mint has produced a UK 50p coin to celebrate the legacy of the Mary Poppins books and the works of P. L. Travers and Mary Shepard.
