The 1980 Great Britain Gold Half Sovereign is a modern proof issue struck by the Royal Mint in 22-carat gold. Weighing 3.99 grams and measuring 19.3mm in diameter, it contains nearly 0.118 troy ounces of fine gold. The obverse bears Arnold Machin’s elegant portrait of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, used on sovereigns from 1968 to 1984. The reverse carries Benedetto Pistrucci’s classic depiction of St George slaying the dragon, a design synonymous with sovereign coinage since 1817.

Issued exclusively in proof quality for collectors, the 1980 Half Sovereign was not intended for circulation, unlike earlier sovereigns. Its release came during a period of renewed interest in bullion and proof gold coinage, with the Royal Mint responding to strong collector and investor demand.
