Valerian: The Alpha Missions was designed by Ryan Miller, and it is directly inspired by Besson’s film adaptation without simply recreating the story of the movie. For anyone who is unfamiliar with the comic or the film, Alpha is the titular “City of a Thousand Planets.” In the 28th century, Alpha has become a massive space station that is home to over 3,000 alien species, almost all of whom have come together for a common purpose and created something unique in the universe. Valerian and his partner, Laureline, are human agents who have been assigned to protect Alpha from a threat that may destroy it.

The Alpha Missions allows two-to-four players to form a team that has been sent into one of Alpha’s contested zones. Players must cooperate in order to evade enemies and finish their target objectives before being captured. The adventure unfolds through each turn on a tile map, which means that the mission can dramatically change every game with several unique configurations. To add more variety and intrigue, hundreds of cards have also been included, and players will have to constantly eliminate enemy beacons to keep their characters from being tracked. The ever-changing configuration of the map also means that new strategies will have to be devised for each game.
