About Craft

In the villages of Kutch, traditions run between the threads of warp and the weft going up & down, in & out. In this, the humble handloom, a complex and laborious system sustains many artisan families in Bhujodi who live and breathe their craft.

The weavers of Kutch claim a 500-year-old history in the region. In the olden times, the weavers of Kutch used to earn their daily bread by barter system where they used to produce carpets, shawls and exchange them with farmers for their crops.                                                                               

Over decades, the weavers have found more and more demand for their cloth. They expanded their skills to create one-of-a-kind pieces that not only became the identity of their community but also their primary source of income.

The craft has over the years taken a drastic step of revival in order to meet the urban consumer requirements, while at the same time keeping its identity unchanged with the use of classic motifs such as as vakhiyo, chaumukh, satkani, hathi, dholki, created using the extra weft method.   

Today Kutch products like stoles/ shawls help sustain the knowledge, traditions and culture of the local community avoiding the need for otherwise highly skilled craftspeople to migrate to cities for unskilled labour in exchange for minimum wages.

Our handwoven Kutch stoles or extra weft stoles in the same way have gone through various steps and artisan hands (entire artisan families) before it reaches you. It has been lovingly touched by an entire family of highly skilled artisans!
