A stunning luxury chess set featuring 1853 Paulsen Reproduction ebony pieces, a 55 cm Spanish palisander board and a handcrafted wooden case.

Based on the traditional Staunton design, the 1853 Paulsen Reproduction pieces are handcrafted from solid ebony and boxwood. They are painstakingly carved and finished to perfection, and the bases (quite broad for this height) are then covered with billiard cloth so that your board will not be damaged during battle. The 1853 Paulsen Reproduction chessmen have an 8.9 cm king and have been named after Louis Paulsen (Jan 1833 to August 1891), who, during the 1860s and 1870s, was among the top five players in the world.

To accommodate these historic pieces, we have matched them with a beautiful 55 cm board from Spain. The high-grade mongoy palisander and maple veneers create a beautiful playing field for the Paulsen pieces and, with its 5.5 cm playing squares, suits them perfectly.

Whilst not in play, there is a stunning wenge-coloured wooden chess piece case included. These cases are crafted by the world-famous, family-run business, Manopoulos of Greece, renowned for their skill and expertise in this field. The box features a large compartment, and with the brass colour hinges and clasps, this case is a timeless classic.
