Skafte, Martin (1980-)

24 Preludes by Swedish composer Martin Skafte. After studying composition at the Conservatory on the island of Gotland, he studied for five years at the Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in Gothenburg, and is now an active composer and guest lecturer at Boston, Berklee, and Malmö Conservatory. His previous fascination with Debussy's preludes inspired him to compose his own collection of preludes, quoting Debussy's works but also using his own musical vocabulary to create a new collection. The result is a collection with a humorous flavor, sometimes including ragtime and jazz idioms, but requiring the virtuosity of a Liszt work to perform. Here, the pianist Jonas Olsson, a fellow Swedish pianist, plays the piano beautifully. Studied under Pierre-Laurent Emaard, he specializes in contemporary music, and is especially known for his masterful performances of works by Pierre Boulez as a member of the Lucerne Music Festival Academy.
