Soler, Antonio (1729-1783)
Description:
Soler became organist at the Royal Palace of the Escorial, founded by Philip II of Spain in 1757. He was a friar as well as a composer. He was also a talented man who excelled in music theory, was involved in making musical instruments, and was known as someone who "played the organ like the devil. Nevertheless, his usual life was very simple, and he seemed to have a regular daily routine, praying from morning to night and composing in his free time. Like his contemporary Domenico Scarlatti, he composed some 150 sonatas as a teacher of the Spanish prince Don Gabriel, all of which are technical and inventive works of great quality and not merely educational. Avagyan, who will be performing, is the winner of the 63rd Maria Canals International Music Competition held in Barcelona in 2017. She is an attractive pianist with a gorgeous tone and light touch.
