The second album in two years by Joe Lovano's trio Tapestry is now available, following their 2019 debut. The trio's musical concept - described by the Boston Globe as "a vocalization of hushed assurance, lyricism, and suspense" - is taken to the next level on this album, a recording that stands out for its intense focus. Lovano, a saxophonist whose work transcends the history of modern jazz, plays with extraordinary sensitivity in Trio Tapestry. The music he composes for the group encourages subtle and differentiated responses from his creative partners, whether gently melodic or contemplative, harmonically open and rhythmically free or spiritual. Lovano describes their interactions as "magical," and Carmen Castaldi's space-conscious approach to drumming further refines the improvisational understanding he and Lovano have shared since the 1970s.It is also a wonderful context for Marilyn Crispell's solos, countermelodies, and improvisational embellishments, and her sense of timbre helps the group's chamber music character to flourish. The recording at Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI in Lugano beautifully reproduces every detail of the music.
