Andris Nelsons conducted the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 2011 as a substitute for the renowned conductor James Levine, and after a series of guest appearances, he became the orchestra's music director in 2014. The album features four works he commissioned from various composers within a year of his appointment. The three composers, with the exception of Sontakis, are from the Tanglewood Music Center (TMC), which the Boston Symphony Orchestra presides over, and have close ties to the orchestra. Nathan's work is inspired by Bartók's "Bluebeard's Castle" and Brahms' symphonies, the dramatic "Sonnet" by the Greek-born Sontakis, "Everything Happens So Much" by Andrés, which was born from a dialogue with his past works, and the works of Kandinsky and Mondrian, Shepherd's "Express Abstractionism," which was inspired by the works of five artists including Kandinsky and Mondrian, was created by arranging blocks of sound generated from the combination of various musical instruments.
