Description:
This is a collection of works by Ecuadorian-born composer Luis Humberto Salgado. Born to a composer father, he entered the National Conservatory of Music in Quito at the age of 8, where he studied piano and composition, but there were no teachers in Ecuador at the time who were familiar with the new trends in European music, such as twelve-tone music and neo-classical music. Salgado gave up his attempt to study in Europe to learn the latest music due to a lack of scholarships, and he taught himself almost exclusively through books and recordings, learning the techniques of contemporary music and attempting to fuse them with Ecuadorian folk music. His works are a vibrant blend of modern, sophisticated harmonies and the dances of Ecuador's indigenous San Juanito people. This CD includes a cello sonata in a neoclassical style, a woodwind quintet with a variety of ideas, and "Serene (the name of the Greek goddess of the moon)," inspired by the successful Apollo 11 moon landing.
