The works of Carl Maria von Weber combine profound eloquence with simple folk elements; they are filled with the ardor that would come to characterize the Romantic period. Weber is primarily known as the composer of the opera «Der Freischütz» as well as for his colorful instrumental and orchestral works. He was also the composer of a significant number of Lieder whose influence can be found throughout the complete spectrum of song types, from buoyant folk songs to passionate, fervent, through-composed songs that reflect the spirit of the «Sturm und Drang.»

Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, whose name is synonymous with the German Lied, has chosen a selection of Weber’s songs for this recording. Fischer-Dieskau is ably accompanied by Hartmut Höll on the piano. This CD is one of the last documents of the great Fischer-Dieskau’s artistry—he has now permanently retired as an active artist.
